| 2. | How do I prepare for a live draft on MyFantasyLeague.com? Answer: So, you're considering running your "live draft" via the MyFantasyLeague.com web site? Great! Since your live draft is one of the most important parts of the season, it's essential that you do a little preparation for running your draft on-line, to make sure it goes as smoothly as possible. Therefore, we strongly encourage you read and understand all of the following potential "gotchas" related to running your live draft on the MyFantasyLeague.com site.
| 1. | First, determine if a MFL live on-line draft is really what you want to do. |
We recommend live drafts on MyFantasyLeague.com only for leagues that want to conduct a draft all at once, where the owners are geographically separated (i.e., not all together in the same room). If all owners are together in one room, or, you'd like to conduct your draft in a more "slow" email-type fashion, we do not recommend the use of the live draft feature. For a more detailed explanation, please visit our Commissioner Tutorials > How do I decide what draft is right for my league? page.
| 2. | Next, make sure your draft is set up properly. |
| c. | Have owners traded draft picks before the draft, and those draft picks are not yet reflected on your league Draft Reports? If so, you can make those kinds of changes to your draft order via the For Owners > Trades option to be able to trade draft picks between owners. |
| d. | Are owners set up to be allowed to go into "live draft" mode? Go to your For Commissioners > Setup > General League Setup page - make sure that the "At the start of the season, rosters are determined by:" option is set to "On-line, "live" draft that happens all at once, taking a matter of hours to complete." |
| e. | Is your draft timer set up properly? Also in the General Draft & Timer Setup page - look and see what the "Turn Draft Timer:", "Set Timer To:" and "When the timer expires:" options are set to - make sure that they properly reflect your league rules regarding how long an owner can be "on the clock" for, and what happens when that time limit expires. |
| 3. | Next, make sure all owners understand the "pre-draft" feature and the "My Draft List" feature on the MyFantasyLeague.com site. |
The "pre-draft" feature on the site was designed mainly for long-running email-type drafts, but at times it can be helpful for live drafts, too. The most important thing to understand about this feature is the following:
Any pre-draft picks submitted by an owner will be selected as soon as it's that owner's turn to pick for that given pick of the draft. In other words, if you have submitted pre-draft picks for round 2 of your draft, as soon as the team before you in round 2 picks in your draft, the system will go through your pre-draft list at that time (even if you're actively logged into the draft!) and make your pick for you.
If an owner has to step away from his computer for a moment for whatever reason during a live draft, he may want to pre-draft for an upcoming round or two so as to not hold up the draft while he is away, so the system can automatically make his picks for him.
The "My Draft List
" feature allows owners to set up a personal draft list for picks, without automatically having those picks made as soon as the team is on the clock. It should be thought of as more of a personally-defined draft guide.
| 4. | Next, make sure all owners understand the "draft tracker" feature on the MyFantasyLeague.com site. |
The "draft tracker" feature was designed to make a pick for an absent owner. Using rules described in the "How The Draft Tracker Picks Players" section below, owners that allow the timer to expire may be able to have the system make an intelligent pick (based on other 2008 completed drafts) on their behalf.
| 5. | Next, make sure all owners log into the live draft chat room to get a feel for exactly how this live draft will work. |
This is probably the most important step of all - all owners need to at least experiment with the live draft pages a little bit before the start of your live draft to make sure that they don't have any problems accessing those pages from their computer, and get a general feel for how things work before your draft actually starts. Otherwise, you may well spend the first half-hour or more of your draft just making sure everyone is logged on properly, and understand what they need to do on the site. Once owners get into the live draft page, if they do have errors or problems, they can use the link to the classic MyFantasyLeague.com live draft, which provides a simpler interface for drafting, but should still allow them to draft along with the rest of your league.
| 6. | Finally, understand what to do in case of unexpected problems during your live draft. |
For an important real-time event like a live draft, if things go wrong, they can snowball in a hurry. You need to be sure that even after you've done all of the above important steps, you consider the following.
| a. | When the commissioner accesses the live draft screen, the lower window offers a set of 'Commissioner Controls' including: |
Pause Timer - use this to stop the timer in a live draft. Once clicked, this will remove the countdown timer from the live draft page.
Reset Timer - use this item to reset a timer (that may or may not have been previously paused) to the max per-pick timer value.
Skip Pick - click on this link to advance the draft by one pick without making a selection for the current pick.
Undo Last Pick - select this item to revert the draft by a single pick. You can also use item "b" below to undo multiple picks quickly.
Clear Above Messages - click on this link to clear out the entire chat message history for all owners. Once cleared, this information cannot be restored.
| b. | If someone (or the system) makes a pick that you'd like to "undo", you can do that by going to the For Commissioners > Setup > Draft Setup > Revert Draft screen to "back up" your draft to any point in the past, and then continue drafting. Note that after doing a "Revert Draft", everyone in the league must refresh their entire live draft page to see the updated draft results. This is especially useful if several picks were made in error. See also item "a" above (Undo Last Pick) to easily revert a single pick. |
| c. | In some cases it might be easier to just change a draft pick (ie, an owner made an obvious mistake). Use the For Commissioners > Setup > Draft Setup > Change Draft Pick screen to adjust any single pick in the draft. These adjustments will include the text "Replacement pick made by Commissioner" in the comments column of the draft report. After doing a "Change Draft Pick", everyone in the live draft room mush refresh the live draft page to see the updated draft results. |
| d. | When a pick just needs to be skipped for any reason, use the For Commissioners > Setup > Draft Setup > Skip Draft Pick page. Skipped picks will include the text "Pick Skipped By Commissioner" in the comments column of the draft report. |
| c. | If you find that people are having problems getting access to your live draft, and the system is still advancing your draft due to the timer expiring, the first thing you should do is turn off your draft timer via the For Commissioners > Setup > Draft Setup > Draft Timer Setup page for a round or two until everything smooths out a little, and then turning it back on. |
| d. | Sometimes, owners may have unanticipated computer problems, Internet connection problems, personal emergencies, etc. that cause the best laid plans to go to awry. Do you have a backup plan in place in case any unforeseen problems occur? |
| e. | If you have other problems that you can't immediately solve, please use the Help >Help Center option available from all league pages - that page goes over in detail all of the options you have available to you for getting further assistance for your draft problems. |
In conclusion, we know that your live draft on the MyFantasyLeague.com site will be a great success, but to ensure it's success, you need to follow these important instructions above!
IMPORTANT NOTES:
| • | While it's possible to run a live draft without the league commissioner present in the live draft room, we strongly recommend that a league commissioner be present at all times for a live draft. The "Commissioner Controls" mentioned above are essential for recovering from problems that might happen during the course of a live draft - without a commissioner present, no one will be able to pause the draft timer, undo draft picks, or any of the other sometimes necessary commissioner options mentioned above. This situation becomes extremely difficult to manage for deluxe leagues that hold multiple drafts at the same time. |
| • | If pick 1.01 has been pre-drafted, and the draft timer is on, the draft will start as soon as the Draft Start Time passes. However, if pick 1.01 has not been pre-drafted, then the timer does not actually start until the franchise owner of pick 1.01 actively makes his/her selection. This has been done to allow all owners extra time to get into the live draft. |
| • | In some circumstances, all owners may have to use the "Refresh" button on their web browser to get an up-to-date live draft page. If any of the following events happens in your live draft, "Refreshing" your live draft page will bring it back up-to-date: Commissioner does a "Change Draft Pick", commissioner changes the draft timer length on the "Draft Timer Setup" page, or owners trade draft picks in the middle of a live draft (or, anything else along these lines that causes the draft order to change in the middle of a live draft). |
| • | If there will be two different franchise owners at one computer during a live draft, you might be tempted to let each owner "take turns" at the computer, logging on and logging off of the site between picks. We strongly discourage you from taking this approach, as it will lead to a lot of confusion and delays in your draft. Instead, we recommend installing two different web browsers on the computer (Firefox - available at http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
is an excellent [and free!] web browser) - then, one owner can remain logged into the site using each browser, so they only need to take turns at the keyboard, and they will not continually log in and log out of the site when it's their turn to pick. |
| • | If a majority of franchise owners are at one computer with a few located elsewhere - AND - an online MFL draft has been defined, have the commissioner login to make all the picks for the group of owners as the constant login-pick-logout for each team would be too cumbersome and interfere with your online draft. |
| • | Here's a detailed scenario from a customer who reported unexpected live draft problems, even though they thought they had completely prepared for their live draft. In their testing of the live draft room, they did it with one laptop computer on a wireless network. When their real live draft started, there were many laptops on that same wireless network, which completely overwhelmed the network's bandwidth, effectively grinding their live draft to a halt. The solution to the problem? Only have one commissioner use his laptop for the live draft, entering everyone's picks as they happened. |
| • | Since the league chat feature is per league, and live drafts for deluxe leagues are per division or per conference, the chat module displayed in the live draft will display all league chat messages, and not just the chat messages associated with the current deluxe league division/conference draft, which might cause some confusion if multiple drafts for a deluxe league are happening at the same time.

How The Draft Tracker Picks Players
| 1. | Look at league's starting lineup requirements. Look at franchise's current roster. If there are any holes in the current roster that prevents the owner from submitting a complete starting lineup, get a list of those positions that the franchise needs. If franchise can submit a complete starting lineup already, look at all positions. |
| 2. | Look at current draft tracker results. Given how many drafts are collated there, determine a cutoff - the cutoff is the minimum number of drafts that a player has to be drafted in to be looked at (otherwise, he'll just be ignored). This prevents players that were drafted in only a few leagues, but happened to be drafted very high, from being assigned to a franchise. The cutoff starts out at 5% of the total number of drafts. For example, if there are currently 150 drafts in the draft tracker, the system will only look at players who have been picked in 8 or more drafts |
| 3. | The system takes up to 4 passes over all draft tracker results in order to try to pick a player for you. In the first pass, it tries to fill a starting lineup need looking at only players that we drafted in the above cutoff number of drafts. If no players were found in the first pass, it halves the number of drafts for the cutoff, and looks again. If no players were found in the second pass, it halves the number of drafts for the cutoff again, and looks again. Finally, if no players were found in the third pass, it ignores the starting lineup needs, and looks for any player that was drafted in at least the lowest cutoff number of drafts, and looks again. |
The most important take-home message from this long explanation is that draft tracker picks were originally designed for (and are still intended for) a "last-ditch, if all else fails, for some reason the owner (or someone else) messed up and didn't make his pick, so let me make what might be an appropriate pick" kind of situation, and definitely not a "make the same pick that a well-informed semi-expert, who understands all the nuances of my league rules, injuries, etc., to hopefully make the pick best pick possible" kind of situation. In other words, if you expect to have a perfect roster at the end of your draft, you need to be present for your draft, and not rely on the draft tracker to make picks for you. Some specific situations when the Drat Tracker has been known to not pick good, or even pick at all, for leagues, include:
| 1. | If your league drafts early in the off-season, it may not have accumulated enough information to pick for your league. |
| 2. | If your league uses relatively less used positions (Off, ST, TMQB, TMPK, PN, TMPN, and to a certain extent, IDP positions [DL/DT/LB/CB/S]). |
| 3. | If your league has an extremely deep roster (say, 400 or more players on your fantasy rosters in total), it may not be able to pick players towards the end of the draft. |

| 3. | How do I set up a keeper/dynasty league draft on MyFantasyLeague.com? Answer: If you have a keeper or dynasty league where some or all players on rosters are carried over from year to year, there is a certain sequence of events that you will need to go through to prepare for your on-line draft on MyFantasyLeague.com. This How To guide will walk you through those steps.
IF YOU HAD A LEAGUE WITH US IN 2007
| 1. | From your 2007 league home page, log in as the league commissioner, and click on the commissioner home page message link to upgrade your league to a 2008 league. Log into this new 2008 league as Commissioner. |
| 2. | Make sure your 2008 league is set up to hold an on-line draft by going to your For Commissioners > Setup > General League Setup
page and make sure that the "At the start of the season, rosters are determined by:" option is set to one of the first two "On-line draft" settings (email or live). |
NOTE: Do not use the Draft Order Setup - One Round option to manually account for future draft pick trades as these will be automatically accounted for in step #6 below.
| 4. | (Optional Step for Keeper/Dynasty Leagues). Go to the For Commissioners > Setup > Players and Rosters > Transfer Rosters
screen and check the checkbox next to each player that should be transferred from the 2007 end-of-season rosters. This will move those players onto each owner's active roster for your 2008 league, and make those players un-draftable for your 2008 league. |
| 5. | (Optional Step for Keeper/Dynasty Leagues). Once your league has determined each owner's keeper players, you must use the For Commissioners > Setup > Players and Rosters > Select Keepers screen to specify which players should be retained on each franchise roster. Any players not selected will be dropped from the roster. If the 2008 draft has been defined, you can optionally define the specific draft pick taken by each keeper player. For example, if your league rules dictate that an owner can keep up to three players, in lieu of their first 3 rounds of draft picks, when the commissioner loads the keepers onto the rosters at the beginning of the season, he may indicate what draft pick the owner has given up for that keeper player. Once the commissioner has completed the "load keepers" step, the system will automatically update the draft report to indicate the keeper players in their appropriate slot, and also automatically skip over that pick when it comes up in your draft. |
| 6. | If you had a 2007 league with us, and allowed owners to trade future year draft picks in 2007, go to the For Commissioners > Setup > Draft Setup > Import Future Draft Pick Trades option to have the system automatically update your 2008 draft order based on the actual 2008 draft pick trades. Note that it is important that you do this step before letting owners actively trade on the site, as otherwise there will be confusion due what looks like duplicate listings of draft picks on your For Owners > Trades
page. |
| 7. | Finally, make sure that all of your other draft settings in the For Commissioners > Setup > Draft Setup screens are correct for your league draft, and then you'll be all ready to start your draft. |
IF YOU ARE NEW TO MFL IN 2008
| 1. | Go to the For Commissioners > Setup > Players and Rosters > Load/Unload Rosters
page, and indicate what players initially should be put on what rosters for each franchise. This will make those players un-draftable for your 2008 league. |
| 2. | Make sure your 2008 league is set up to hold an on-line draft by going to your For Commissioners > Setup > General League Setup
page and make sure that the "At the start of the season, rosters are determined by:" option is set to one of the first two "On-line draft" settings (email or live). |
| 4. | Use the For Commissioners > Setup > Draft Setup > Draft Order Setup - One Round
to now remove the specific draft picks used in lieu of the 'keeper' players. For example, if five out of eight teams in a league kept a single player, modify the first round of the draft to only include the three picks that correspond to the franchises that did not keep a player. |
If the 2008 draft has been defined, you can optionally you can also define the specific draft pick taken by each keeper player. |
| 6. | Finally, make sure that all of your other draft settings in the For Commissioners > Setup > Draft Setup screens are correct for your league draft, and then you'll be all ready to start your draft. |
NOTE: One common question we get about keeper league drafts on the site is "What happens to the players currently on rosters when a draft starts?" The short answer to that question is "nothing" – the system will see that those players are currently on rosters (and simply leave them on the rosters), and thus make them un-draftable to other owners in your league.

| 5. | How do I Setup a Flex position? Answer: On the For Commissioner > Setup > Starting Lineup Setup screen define the ranges for each position desired to be treated as a flex position such that the maximum value is greater than the minimum value. Note you cannot choose both an individual and combined position at the same time.
Example: A league requires at least minimum of each of the following starters (2 RBs, 2 WRs, and 1 TE) and then one additional flex starter at RB,WR, or TE. This would be entered as follows:
RB: min=2, max= 3
WR: min = 2, max = 3
TE: min= 1, max = 2
See also the Starting Lineups How To document for more detailed information regarding setting up flex positions.

| 6. | How do I use the Home Page Modules & Tabs Setup page? Answer:
This screen is always available for commissioners to set a default for the league. In addition, if the commissioner enabled this capability for owners via Abilities Setup
, each owner may define their own home page setup. Also, if an owner-customized home page needs to be restored to the league's default setup, then either (1) the owner can remove all home page modules and save changes, or (2) the commissioner can remove the owner's home page customization ability in the Abilities Setup
screen.
In general, this screen offers the ability to further customize the appearance of the home page by specifying which system modules to include/exclude as well as define the order of those modules. The site currently offers more than 60 of these modules for your home page.
Select Tab To Edit - By default, you're editing the "Main" tab. However, you can create as many new tabs as you'd like for your league home page, giving each a name. Those tabs will allow owners to see more content on your league home page without having to scroll down to the bottom of the page. Also, you can later delete a tab if you'd like.
Available Modules - This window lists the modules currently not displayed on the league home page.
Currently Used Modules - This window lists the modules that are currently defined for display on the league home page.
Set Module Width - While each module defaults to wide (single column format) or narrow (dual column format), any module's width can be overridden by selecting the appropriate radio button prior to clicking on the 'Add To List' button.
Add To List - Select a module from the Available Modules window and click on this button to move it to the Currently Used Modules window.
Remove From List - Select a module from the Currently Used Modules window and click on this button to remove it from the home page and return it to the Available Modules window.
Move Up - Highlight a module and click on this button to raise it to a higher location in the list and therefore a higher location on the home page.
Move Down - Highlight a module and click on this button to drop it to a lower location in the list and therefore a lower location on the home page.
Stacked vs. Multi-Column - By default, the system will support one column of "stacked" modules using either the narrow or wide format. Modules are either narrow or wide in size and appear with the "(N)" and "(W)" notation after their listing. A wide module will take up the entire width of the home page whereas two narrow modules if placed in succession will combine to take up the entire width of the home page.
Reset To System Default - Click on this link AND the Save Home Page Setup to revert the current modules back to the initial set defined at league creation.
However, you can also use an alternate multi-column format to create two or more columns on your home page and place any modules in each column. In order to use this feature, you must first click on the "multi-column" link. Next, you will need to define at least two columns, each with a corresponding width.
Disclaimer: The column width percentages are treated by web browsers as a guideline, and depending on your web browser and the actual contents of each column, those percentages may not be adhered to very closely for you.
When finished, you MUST click on the Save Home Page Setup button in order to apply your changes.
"Embeddable" Modules
For even greater flexibility in designing your own, custom web site, most of the home page modules can placed (embedded) into your own custom web pages. To learn more about this feature, see this page.

| 7. | What is the FFLM setup configuration program used for? Answer: While most of the capabilities of the configuration program can also be done directly online, some tasks can be made easier through the use of this utility. Although it can be used to import an online draft for use with FFLM (our PC-based product), it's primary focus is on assisting the setup of a MyFantasyLeague.com league. With it you can define an export the following items:
• scoring rules
• head to head schedule
• team information
• salary information
• draft order
• draft results
• rosters
All of the above can be now handled online so the need for this utility is lessened.

| 8. | How do I Add Icons & Logos? Answer: Icons and Logos can be added in the For Owners > Franchise Setup - Advanced. Icons will appear on the League Standing Reports and Logos will appear on the owners Franchise Information report.
To add an Icon or Logo you can choose one of the pre-defined icons, one of the 1000+ helmets, create your own helmet or upload your own file to be used (note the uploaded file must be a GIF or JPEG and less than 75kB in size).
Note: On the For Commissioner > Setup > Icons Setup the option for owners must be “As Specified by owners on Franchise Setup Page” chosen in order for the owners to add their own icons.
If your Image is Greater than 75kB
If your image is greater than 75kB then you will need to store this sound on your web server or a remote location that offers web space (note that most ISP’s that offer free email also offer free web space). If you upload your image here you can then go to the For Owners > Franchise Setup - Advanced and define the URL here.

| 10. | How do I take my league home page customization to the next level? Answer: We pride ourselves on having what we think is not only the most customizable on-line fantasy football league management service on the web, but also the most "open", too. What that "open-ness" means to you, if you're someone with some computer programming and/or web design skills, is that you can extend and customize your MyFantasyLeague.com league a great deal.
Advanced customization options include:
| 1. | Writing custom CSS to completely control all aspects of your league appearance. |
| 2. | Getting access to "raw" MyFantasyLeague.com league data in industry-standard XML format. |
| 3. | Embedding league home page modules in other web pages. |
Writing custom CSS to completely control all aspects of your league appearance
CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) is the industry-standard way of controlling all appearance-related items on web pages. MyFantasyLeague.com uses CSS to control league page appearance (including our skins), and also allows our customers to write their own CSS to completely control any/all page appearance options that you'd like to.
If you'd like to learn more about CSS, you might want to consider some on-line CSS tutorials, or visit your local or on-line bookstore for books on CSS - Eric Meyer seems to write especially good books on this topic.
Once you've learned CSS, next you'll have to learn a bit about the classes and IDs we use on the site. You can do that by setting up a free trial league on our site, and then doing a "View Source" to see our current CSS files, including the CSS files used for each of our skins, to get a better idea of how to write CSS for your MyFantasyLeague.com league pages.
Alternatively, here is another approach that might be easier, allowing you to see exactly what classes and IDs we use on your league pages:
| 1. | Download and install the Firefox web browser. |
| 3. | Go to the league page you're looking to customize. |
| 4. | From the custom toolbar that gets installed, choose the "Information > Display ID And Class Details" option, and you can see exactly what IDs and classes are used on any/all pages on the site. |
| 5. | Where this gets really cool is that you can edit the CSS right on the page, allowing you to immediately see the effects of your CSS changes right away. It will take a bit of time to play around with the web developer extension and learn about all of it's features and options, but this time will be very well spent if you're interested in really taking your design to the next level. |
Finally, once you've written your custom CSS, you can go to the For Commissioners > Setup > Appearance Setup > Images & Other URLs page and upload your custom CSS to our site (or, simply enter the URL for the CSS file on your own server).
Getting access to "raw" MyFantasyLeague.com league data in industry-standard XML format
If you're a computer programmer, we offer the MyFantasyLeague.com Developer's Program
whereby you can easily get access to raw MyFantasyLeague.com data in XML format. This will allow you to quickly and easily get that data into whatever programming environment you're most comfortable, be it PHP, ASP, Excel, Java, Perl, or any other programming language that's capable of reading XML files. This page
offers details of exactly what XML documents we offer via this service. For some examples of what others have done using our XML feed:
Embedding league home page modules in other web pages
All home page modules are "embeddable" - meaning, you can place "live" MyFantasyLeague.com content inside web pages on another web site, your "My Google" customized home page, or inside arbitrary HTML on your MyFantasyLeague.com-hosted pages. Check out the "Reports > League > Embed League Data" page available from all league pages to see how this option works. For examples of what some of our more creative customers have done with this feature, see http://www.returnofthechampions.com/ and http://uffle.com/ .
If you have any suggestions, questions or comments about any of the programs mentioned here, we'd love to hear your feedback on via your "Help > Help Center" page.
